25th December it’s not Christmas Day everywhere…

Living in a country where outside we cannot show or celebrate Christmas, and my husband just left the house to go to work, was thinking about how we invisible can influence our kids. So decided to think a little bit about it and explore this topic, and at same time share with you something that warmed my heart this morning – My son’s Christmas cards for us!

Do you know that the first 4 years impact a child's entire life? A child can comprehend some words by the age of one and 40% of the adult intelligence develops in the first 4 years. Pretty fascinating!!! So that’s the best period to develop a child's physical abilities, intellect, language, imagination and creativity.

As contrary to what we think, a kid hears and understands the most in his formative years and not in later years. That's why it’s imperative that parents should provide their child the best possible and stimulating and motivating atmosphere.

Let your child run around and explore with didactic tools and toys. This is where the role of a pre-school assumes importance. It is very important that what kind of peer group your kid is interacting with at the school because this group forms the learning ground for them about right behaviour, performance, routine, friendship, sharing etc., Your kid can be a "Einstein" in making if he is nurtured in the right environment and, of course with lots of love!

Do us parents give the most to our childs?

Parents do have a significant and vital role to play in a child's formative years!! It’s a disappointment to say that in this techno century we just forget that.

How can we play our roles efficiently?

Give them freedom to move, to think, to express, to explore and let your kid see the world through their eyes and not yours. Give your kids opportunities to show their creativity with colours or dance steps or to interact and relate with the peer group and perform in front of people.
And... as a reminder am sure you know, the most important is to give them love. Appreciate and motivate your child so that he can take on life with confident and optimism and cheerfulness!

So can we look beyond the way Christmas is celebrated today, and find any real meaning, any message for our lives today?

Christmas is the time to rejoice in the glories of Christ's birth and celebrate all the blessings of the Holy Spirit with your friends, family, acquaintances and loved ones.

Welcome to the Dawhat AlJazeera Art Exhibition 2011

Following a challenging and exciting academic year, it gives me great pleasure to display some of the numerous works of art produced by my students from grades 1 to 6.

It also brings me personal satisfaction to witness and measure their skills
progress and develepment.

This is obvious in how precise their works have become and how subconsciously they

have started using technical art terms in their daily life vocabulary.

It's time to go on vacations, but it's also time to reflect on what I have to improve on for next year.

We can always make things better!!

There is a big difference between shape and form, so yesterday was the time for the young ladies of grade 1A class to learn about it, making a soft sculpture. Well... stuffing and decorating an old sock! ;)
The objective was to make the girls express ideas by using a variety of media and tools to create a soft sculpture of oneself.

Neste dia, do ano de 1857, as operárias têxteis de uma fábrica de Nova Iorque entraram em greve, ocupando a fábrica, para reivindicarem a redução de um horário de mais de 16 horas por dia para 10 horas. Estas operárias que, nas suas 16 horas, recebiam menos de um terço do salário dos homens, foram fechadas na fábrica onde, entretanto, se declarara um incêndio, e cerca de 130 mulheres morreram queimadas. Em 1910, numa conferência internacional de mulheres realizada na Dinamarca, foi decidido, em homenagem àquelas mulheres, comemorar o 8 de Março como "Dia Internacional da Mulher". De então para cá o movimento a favor da emancipação da mulher tem tomado forma, tanto em Portugal como no resto do mundo.

Valentine's Day is a festival that cherishes love and romance. The festival falls on February 14 every year and is celebrated in several countries across the world including US, UK, Canada, Japan, France, China and India. Though the festival commemorates the martyrdom of a Christian saint called St Valentine, the festival as it is celebrated today has little religious significance. In present times, Valentine's Day has assumed a secular and global flavor and is celebrated by people of all ages and races. Another noticeable factor in Valentine's Day celebration of present times is that the festival celebrates love in all its forms and is not just restricted to romantic love. People therefore exchange Valentine's Day greetings with their parents, teachers, siblings, friends, sweethearts or anyone special or close to them. The commonest way of expressing love on Valentine's Day is through exchanging cards, flowers and chocolates.

The romantic festival of Valentine's Day is said to have originated in pagan times in Rome when people celebrated annual fertility festival called Feast of Lupercalia in mid-February. A unique custom of the festival was the mating of young boys and girls for a year through a lottery system. Quite often the couple would fall in love and marry. Strongly associated with the festival of Valentine's Day are the legends of three or more Saint Valentine of Rome. One of the most popular legends says, Valentine or Valentinus lived in Rome when the country was under the reign of Emperor Claudius II. It is said that Claudius engaged Rome in several unpopular and bloody campaigns. To maintain a strong army, Claudius continuously needed to recruit soldiers. But to his disappointment Claudius found that most men were unwilling to join army because of their strong attachment with their wives and their families. To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. A romantic at heart priest, Valentine, secretly arranged marriages of young boys and girls and defied this unjustified and callous order of Claudius. When the Emperor discovered this defiance, he put Valentine behind bars and he was finally executed on February 14, about 270 AD. For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death. By Middle Ages, Saint Valentine became the patron saint of love and lovers in England and France. In 498 AD, when Pope Gelasius decided to put an end to pagan celebration of Feast of Lupercalia, he declared that 14th February be celebrated as St Valentine's Day. Some scholars however, say, romance was linked with Valentine's Day because of the popular belief in England and France during the Middle Ages that birds began to start looking for their mate from 14th February.

One of the most important customs of Valentine's Day festival is the exchange of love notes called ‘Valentines' by lovers. The tradition is said to have initiated in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans who sent the first known Valentine Day card to his wife from prison. In present times, Valentine's Day is the second biggest Valentine's Day card-giving holiday after Christmas. There is also the tradition of gifting flowers, chocolates besides other gifts of love on Valentine's Day as an expression of love. Going on a date with one's Valentine is another popular tradition of Valentine's Day festival. Candle light dinners or evening together in a park are an all-time favorite dating idea in present times.

Como deves gostar de historias como eu, aqui fica uma historinha pra ti. Espero que gostes!

A casa de madeira
Pelo Outono, a rata Alina ouvira dizer que o seu bom velho amigo, o texugo Norberto, morava agora numa casa algures na montanha. Há muito tempo que Alina não via Norberto. Nos últimos dias, desde que a neve começara a cair, Alina pensava muito nele, na sua agradável voz resmungona, na sua presença calorosa e reconfortante e na sua grande colecção de livros, que ele muitas vezes lhe lera.
“A casa do Norberto, lá na montanha, de certeza que agora tem luz, é quente e confortável”, pensou a ratinha, e naquele momento a sua toca começou a parecer-lhe apertada e abafada. No dia seguinte, tomou uma decisão:
— Vou ter com o Norberto! Não sei ao certo onde mora, mas não deve ser assim tão difícil de encontrar.
Alina calçou as botas quentes de ratinha, vestiu um casaco grosso de lã e pôs-se a caminho. Foi subindo a montanha, cada vez mais para cima, pela neve funda. Por pouco não dava com a casa do texugo! A noite já estava a chegar e ela ainda à procura do caminho através do bosque. E, para mais, começara a cair um nevão! Mas a ratinha não era medrosa.
“Se não encontrar hoje a casa do texugo, cavo um buraco fundo na neve”, pensou ela, “e assim não fico gelada…”
Mas, por fim, lá acabou por encontrar o caminho para fora do bosque, e viu à sua frente, num declive, a casa do texugo!
Era de madeira. Nas janelas brilhava uma luz amarela e quente e, da chaminé alta, saía um longo rasto de fumo que balançava ao vento.
Alina juntou as últimas forças e correu em direcção à casa. Claro que o texugo se alegrou imenso com a sua chegada. E ambos passaram um Inverno maravilhoso e confortável na casa de madeira, longe de tudo, lendo e conversando…

Mom's Day is an annual holiday that remembers mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well the constructive contributions that Moms make in all cultures.

This year I invited some charming young loving friends over (Hamoudi, Lana and Mariam) to prepare personal gifts for their moms.

ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (8 MARCH)

International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
1908

Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
1909

In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.
1910

A second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named a Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament, greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was the result.
1911

Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women's Day (IWD) was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic 'Triangle Fire' in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women's Day events. 1911 also saw women's 'Bread and Roses' campaign.
1913-1914

On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women’s Day ever since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women's solidarity.
1917

On the last Sunday of February, Russian women began a strike for "bread and peace" in response to the death over 2 million Russian soldiers in war. Opposed by political leaders the women continued to strike until four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women's strike commenced was Sunday 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was 8 March.
1918 - 1999

Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually. For many years the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes. 1975 was designated as 'International Women's Year' by the United Nations. Women's organisations and governments around the world have also observed IWD annually on 8 March by holding large-scale events that honour women's advancement and while diligently reminding of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life.
2000 and beyond

IWD is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and more.

Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.
So make a difference, think globally and act locally!! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.

Eid al-Fitr Arabic: عيد الفطر (also spelled Eid ul-Fitr) is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. The word Fitr means "to break", which symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period and of all evil habits.

Muslims are commanded to complete their fast on the last day of Ramadan and then recite the Takbir all throughout the period of Eid.

The first Eid was celebrated in 624 CE by the Prophet Muhammad with his friends and relatives after the victory of the battle of Jang-e-Badar.

Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking Allah for the help and strength that he gave them throughout the previous month to help them practice self-control.

The festival begins when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky.

The celebratory atmosphere is increased by everyone wearing best or new clothes, and decorating their homes.

Eid is also a time of forgiveness, and making amends, spiritual renewal, as well as celebration and feasting with friends and relatives.

In Arabic: ن‎ رمضا‎ (also written Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramdan, Ramadaan) is an Islamic religious observance that takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar; the month in which the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

In the western calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving forward about ten days each year. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, sexual conduct, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured; from dawn until sunset.

Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramaḍan is a time to fast for the sake of Allah, and to offer more prayer than usual. Muslims also believe through good actions, they get rewarded twice as much as they normally can achieve.

During Ramaḍan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

It’s Valentine’s Day!!!!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius at all, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have big armed forces. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius angry or better… furious! So what happened? He had an unwise and crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was nasty and cruel. I thought it was ridiculous! I certainly wasn't going to support that decree!

By the way, did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies (secretly, of course). It was really quite stimulating and exciting! Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself... We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did indeed hear footsteps. It was creepy! Thank God the couple I was marrying runaway in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment and sentence was death.

I really tried to stay positive and cheerful… but do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love and friendship.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits and emotional state up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember me. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh, because they know that love can't be beaten!Celebrate it!

In my research I did not discover the foundation of this day. Maybe it was a baker, perhaps it was a food company… Most likely it was a chocolate cake eater!

On this day, a white or yellow cake will not do at all! Nor will part chocolate or part white will meet requirements… It must be chocolate, all chocolate! You can make milk chocolate, dark chocolate, fudge, or any other type of chocolate cake.

The only allusion to Chocolate Day it’s just cards and calendar websites. This might lead you to conclude that this is a day for (and by) the cards companies. ;)

But we know it better - this day is for you, and all chocolate lovers!

There are three objectives of Chocolate Cake Day: To bake a chocolate cake, to decorate a chocolate cake and to eat a chocolate cake. Of course, if you are to busy to bake or decorate a cake, then just eating a chocolate cake will certainly do!

Today is National Religious Freedom Day in the United States, an event that celebrates one of the most cherished freedoms in EUA. It was on this day, January 16, in 1786 that the Virginia State Assembly adopted Thomas Jefferson's famous Virginia Stature for Religious Freedom. This landmark legislation became the foundation for the freedom of religion granted under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The freedom of religious expression in the U.S. has remained unshaken for 221 years, and it has been the inspiration for religious liberty around the globe.

The goal of Religious Freedom Day is to promote and protect students' religious expression rights by informing educators, parents, and students about these liberties.

The White House issued this proclamation:

With Christmas and New Year just about the corner, it's the time of the year to be cheerful and merry. Celebrate the warmth of the season and multiply the happiness around. It’s also time for Holiday Thank You! Be grateful for the gifts that your friends/ family/ loved ones have given you. Thank them for making your Holiday Season a great one!

Around the world, holiday greetings are a selection of greetings that are often spoken with good intentions to strangers, family, friends, or other people during the months of December and January.

Holidays with greetings include Christmas, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Ramadan (which falls at a different time each year; every year it goes back a month) and recently, Kwanzaa. Some greetings are more prevalent than others, depending on the cultural and religious status of any given area.

Typically, a greeting consists of the word "Happy" followed by the holiday, such as "Happy New Year", although the phrase "Merry Christmas" is a notable exception.

The tradition of sending Christmas cards originated in the mid-1800s when a few people began to design handmade cards to send to family and friends. A man named John Calcott Horsely is credited as being the first to actually print Christmas cards. The card depicted a family enjoying the holiday, with scenes of people performing acts of charity. The card was inscribed: "Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to You".

Eid Al-Adha / 8th December

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى) or the Festival of Sacrifice is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims and Druze worldwide in commemoration of the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah (God). The devil tempted Ibrahim by saying he should disobey Allah and spare his son. As Ibrahim was about to kill his son, Allah intervened: instead Allah provided a lamb as the sacrifice. This is why today all over the world Muslims who have the means to, sacrifice an animal, as a reminder of Ibrahim's obedience to Allah. The meat is then shared out with family and friends, as well as the poorer members of the community (Islam names Ishmael as the son who was to be sacrificed, whereas the Judeo-Christian name Isaac).
Eid al-Adha is one of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from the Quran.
Eid ul-Adha annually falls on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja (ذو الحجة) of the lunar Islamic calendar. The festivities last for two to three days or more depending on the country. Eid ul-Adha occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.

It's Advent!!! For a few its Thanksgiving!

Advent (from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming") is a season of the Christian church, the period of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus, in other words, the period immediately before Christmas.

Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used in reference to the second coming. Christians believe that the season of Advent serves a dual reminder of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah as well as the waiting that Christians today endure as they await the second coming of Christ.

Celebrating Advent

Advent is one of the few Christian festivals that can be experimented in the home as well as in the church. In its association with Christmas, Advent is a natural time to engage kids in actions at home that openly connect with devotion at church. At home an Advent wreath is often placed on the dining table and the candles lighted at meals, with Scripture readings preceding the lighting of the candles, especially on Sunday. A new candle is lighted each Sunday during the four weeks, and then the same candles are lighted each meal during the week. In this environment, it provides the chance for family affection and prayer collectively, and helps teach the Faith to children, especially if they are involved in reading the daily Scriptures.

An Advent Reflection

"It is truly a humbling experience to read back through the Old Testament and see how fragile and imperfect all the "heroes" actually are. Abraham, the coward who cannot believe the promise. Jacob, the cheat who struggles with everybody. Joseph, the immature and arrogant teen. Moses, the impatient murderer who cannot wait for God. Gideon, the cowardly Baal-worshipper. Samson, the womanizing drunk. David, the power abusing adulterer. Solomon, the unwise wise man. Hezekiah, the reforming king who could not quite go far enough. And finally, a very young Jewish girl from a small village in a remote corner of a great empire.

It never ceases to amaze me why God could not have chosen "better" people to do His work in the world. Yet if God can use them, and reveal Himself through them in such amazing ways, it means that He might be able to use me, inadequate, and unwise, and too often lacking in faith that I am. And it means that I need to be careful that I do not in my own self-righteousness put limits on what God can do with the most unlikely of people in the most unlikely of circumstances. I think that is part of the wonder of the Advent Season. "

World Hello Day

World Hello Day

Every year, November 21 is World Hello Day. They say one of the goals is to say hello to ten people on the day. By greeting others, the message is for world leaders to use communication rather than force to settle and mend conflicts.

This event started in 1973 to react to the conflict between Egypt and Israel. Since then, World Hello Day has been pragmatic and is celebrated in 180 countries by politicians, religious leaders and celebrities. Folks around the world use the time of World Hello Day as a chance to convey their concern for world harmony.

This day it is also an opportunity to celebrate world language learning with our friends and family. Psssst Psssst ... Of course this celebration shouldn’t stop in November.

Why don’t we start and learn how to say “Hello”, “Peace” or “Welcome” in other languages??

The date decreed for World Kindness Day is 13th November. The opening day of the first World Kindness Movement® conference was in 1988. This conference brought the signatories of the ‘declaration of kindness’ of the World Kindness Movement together in 1997.

The intention of World Kindness Day is to look ahead of ourselves, ahead of the boundaries of our country, ahead of our culture, our race, our religion; we are citizens of the world! We must understand that if progress is to be made in human relations, if we are to accomplish the goal of peaceful coexistence, we must focus on what we have in common. When we find likenesses we begin to experience sympathy. While we may believe that people from other cultures are ‘different’ when we compare them with our own habits and beliefs, it doesn’t mean that we are any better than they are. When we become friends with someone from a different culture we find out that despite some obvious differences, there are many similarities.

What is an Act of Kindness?
An act of kindness is an unplanned gesture of goodwill towards someone or something - our fellow humans, the animal kingdom, and the empire of nature. Kind expressions and deeds come from a state of generosity, generated by a core response deep within all of us. When we carry out an act of kindness it is a message from one heart to another, an act of love, an unspoken "I care" declaration.

"Forget Me Not" Day

When is it?
Always November 10th
"Forget-Me-Not" Day is a day to remember family, friends and dear ones.
Lets use this day to get in touch with family, friends and loved ones, especially those who we haven't seen in a while. You don't want them to forget you, do you??

(In the 15th century in Germany, it was supposed that the wearers of the flower would not be forgotten by their lovers.
Legend has it that in medieval times, a knight and his lady were walking along the side of a river. He picked a posy of flowers, but because of the weight of his armour, he fell into the river. As he was drowning he threw the posy to his loved one and shouted "Forget-me-not". This is a flower connected with romance and tragic fate. It was often worn by ladies as a sign of faithfulness and enduring love.
